My first post. I have just sold mine on ebay, it was fine on the pc via the usb, but playing video on it was a nightmare. I like my videos in high quality that is why I got one then I could watch a film at the same quality as a UMD. The drive cant keep up with it, whats worse is it cant keep up with the highest setting on mas media as well. I narrowed it down to the video being the problem.
I tried one film and played around with encodes for 8 hours and it wasnt until I dropped it to rougly a bitrate of 512 did it play without jittering, sound jumping and going horrendously out of sync.
For storage it was great, music good and photos etc but movies, no. I have a 1.5 and the only thing I could think of was that it was based around firmware 2.0 and that has a different way of streaming the video.
If anyone with a firware 2.0 or higher would like to test the drive with a video clip of 416x176, 1500bitrate, 128 sound. Would be good to hear from anyone else with 1.5 that has it working properly at those settings also.

hmm il test aswell mines an original release 1.0 upgraded to 1.5 and never had a problem like described using a memory stick, so i dont think its the firmware the datel instructions do mention in the manual about video problems which m be to cover there own backs we will hve to see.

If you have a motion heavy movie, just the 8 minute clip of the multiple smith fight in Matrix Reloaded caused major problems. Even the Clone Wars Cartoons freaked out at 1500 bitrate.

Are you letting the clip play for a few mins, as the ones I tried usually took a couple of mins before it started acting up. Pleased though that yours is working okay, just gutted that what I wanted it for isn't working right on mine.

what software you using to convert with

I have used many different ones.
psp video 9
3gp converter
xilisoft psp converter
psp max media
imtoo psp encoder
etc etc lol
All of my files work fine off memory stick so it has to be the access speed?

i used sonys own Image Converter 2 Plus and pspware thay seem to work the videos are good may be the only way is to reduce the bit rate

All the ones I've came across work fine on my ceramic 1.5. Converted my own as well with X-OOM and they play fine. can't be access speed, these things aren't as fast as HS Duo Pro but they are faster than UMD. 25 mins to fill it and roughly the same to rip back to PC sugests that data rate isn't great but it aint terrible more than quick enough for streaming a constant 500MB over 90 mins say, unless it's buffering and not spinning up quick enough for folks. Gotta be an encoder or firmware problem IMHO. Lets face it it's been reading games off of the drive for 4 days straight now without much of a problem.

A 500mb 90 minute movie would be at a bitrate of roughly 512-768 which I got in most cases running fine. I agree with the speed of file transfer. Have you got any movies or clips that are of high bitrate (1500) and high sound quality (128) to test? Would be interested in knowing what you get with the new ceramic one.

mines ceramic and it plays at that bitrate fine the hardware is the same no difference just the outer shell

Hi All,
I just got mine yesterday and was very excited.
Today, I tried to transfer UMDEmulator there and an ISO file.
In the first place, I found some problems in my computer saying that the hard disk is not formatted, etc. but after several times connecting, it works OK.
However, when I run UMDEmulator, it took ages and finally just comes up with an error saying that the game cannot be played?
What have I done wrong here? Can someone please help?
I didn't use the utility from the CD though, rather than just using the regular USB cable. Can this is caused by this??
PS: I didn't attach the X2 battery when I used the hard disk. I just used the standard battery. Is this a problem?
Thank you.

i just had the 4gb hdd and for videos it is TOTALLY USELESS.
i tried every encoder, at various bitrates and NOTHING works.
i was using it on my up to date 2.5 psp, so its NOT the firmware that is causing problems.
NO AVC video's will play perfectly from this hdd, even at bitrates as low as 380kbps for video and 32kbps for audio.
and as for normal mp4, i had to go down to about 200kbps for video and 32kbps for audio jsut to stop it from skipping, and of course by that point the video looks AWFUL.
my ideal settings are AVC 400x192 768kbps video 192kbps audio.
the reason i bought the hdd was because i wanted top notch video like this, since the 2.5 upgrade completely FIXED the avc stuttering issues that i ahd wioth verison 2.0
from my regular 1gig ms pro duo, avc plays PERFECTLY, even at high bitrates for video and audio....but THE SAME FILES on the hdd keep stuttering every few seconds with the video, and the audio sometimes gets overloaded and stutters too.
it ight have been a faulty unit i guess. i have spoken to lik-sang, they told me to return the unit for testing, if its jsut the design of the unit, i told them ill trade it for the 2gig card, whcih is now only like £1 more.
half the storage, but if it means perfect quality, its worth it.
oh, and as for homebrew......yes, sometimes it works, but for certain app's it gave me the "game could not be started". i guess that for some of them, it isn't fast enough to perform the exploit swap?
overall, i found the product to be a hgue dissappointment........hopefully lik-sang will write back to me when they get it and say that it was just a faulty unit, but given most of the reviews i've heard now, i dount it........it sounds like its just the design of the thing that makes smooth video playback impossible.
by the way......those of you that used sony image converter 2, the reason you might say its "fine" even at higher bitrates, is because, correct me if im wrong, but i thought that sony image covnerter converted at 15fps only????
of course the drive can handle 15fps........but movies shoudl be at 30fps.

Well people, I have only one thing to say. This is what you get when you spend enough money to buy a new psp on a 4 gigabyte hard-drive. You can buy a small 4 gig portable hard drive for 50 bucks, but of course it wont work with the psp. So you buy a hard drive for a $250 PSP for $230.......I can't image this being worth it to anyone, but, good luck!

well backups of umd movies work fine so i don't really use mp4 rips at all. mpr loads fine from the hdd so do iso's and umd movie's.
i prefer umd movies cuse they are better quality and had subs and menu.

Alan, I've been having this same problem for over a week now, a couple of days ago I thought that perhaps the ribbon cable was twisted, so carefully flattening it helped for a day or 2, now it's doing just as you stated above, *not to mention not showing up at all in XMB* so if you found a way to fix it, PLEASE share.
