Xbox.com: How is your backward compatibility solution going to work?
Todd: As you’ve heard from us before, backward compatibility on Xbox 360 is done through software. Now that we’ve solved the technical challenge and the emulator is working, we’re certifying each original Xbox title by hand to run on Xbox 360.
What I’m really proud to tell you and your readers is that it’s easy to get the emulation software, and it’s free. We’ll give gamers a choice—you can get the latest software updates from Xbox Live, burn a CD from xbox.com or sign up on Xbox.com for a CD that can be delivered to your home at a nominal shipping and handling fee. Once you get the CD, put it in your Xbox 360 and you’re ready to go.

So? Its just an emulator for the old games. You still need the originals.

I think you're missing the point here...this INSTALLS SOFTWARE and can be BURNED TO A DISC. Doesn't that sound a little like the Xbox Softmod Bootdiscs?

Yea look at psp, because you can update whit memory stick it was possible to make a hack.
So an xbox360 witch just read burned disc's even whit a real Microsoft program written for xbox360 witch installs the emu, there should be a way to manipulate the program and install everything you want.
At worsth it should only be able the play Xbox games, but I think there’s a way you can play xbox360 games this way also. I think there’s a nice hole somewhere in that beautiful Microsoft software (look at win xp pro:-p still has to download patches every month)

I think you are all missing the fact that the update is signed by MS, just like any PSP update, xbox update file.. If you modify it in any way, even unpacking it and repacking it will cause it to break and give an error probably identical or close to that as you would get by sticking in a burnt xbox game. You can burn any properly coded program to a disc and run it on an xbox 360 if it's signed. If you burn it and copy it off the disc and reburn to another disc, I have a feeling it won't work. This isn't a breakthrough or softmod or software hack at all - simply microsoft getting more of a handle as to where the current marketplace is.
MS finally learned people have burners and computers, and not always want to wire their console and a TV up beside their computer, or run a 200 foot long network cable 2 stories below where the x360 resides, all wired to the 51" plasma and surround sound system.
As long as MS signs the update or file it will run, probably even if it was on an iPod or PSP or whatever else interfaces with the unit.

Umm, do some research before you post stuff like this. The memory stick update feature had nothing to do with the PSP hack. I am pretty sure the V2.0 eboot file requires a special photo to overflow the photo library and cause the PSP to launch unsigned code.
A X360 hack will emerge at some point. The first console took less than half a year after release for some modchips and bioses to appear. Everyone knows that MS can't code security very well and has a lot of people who don't care for the company who would like to show that they are smarter by defeating the security. Windows XP thats around 1200MB installed is in no way comparible to a 360 console running off a 2MB NAND flash chip. MS had great control over the exact software and hardware in this console, they don't on a computer because every single one is different in one way or another, by software or hardware, or both.
