How to Softmod you XBOX [Full Tutorial]
Tutorial written by h@Ck3R, AKA jdw, Knuxyl, & h4Ck3R
Tutorial updated as of 2/02/08 @ 2:45am
This tutorial explains how to Softmod your xbox with any dashboard you want. Softmodding is modding your xbox to be capable of homebrew applications without hardware modifications (mod-chip).
------FOR A BETTER ORGANIZED TUTORIAL DOWNLOAD THE ATTACHMENT------
------Things Needed------
-mIRc [Found here (http://www.mirc.com/get.html)] ** or any other IRC program
-FlashFXP [Found here (http://download2.inicom.net/FlashFXP_32_Setup.exe)] ** or any other FTP program
-PC with IDE cable (if being used, that's ok)
-CD or DVD Burner
-Knowledge of Xbins [Found here (http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xbins.php)]
-Blank CD/DVD
-UXE Package [Found in Xbins]
-Alcohol 120 [Found here (http://www.free-downloads.net/downloads/Alcohol_120_/)] ** or any other image burners (ex. Nero (ftp://ftp4.use.nero.com/software/nero7/Nero-7.2.0.3b_eng_no_yt.exe), UltraISO (http://www.download.com/UltraISO-Premium/3000-2646-10177302.html?part=dl-UltraISOP&subj=uo&tag=button))
-xboxhdm 1.9 [Found here (http://xbox-hq.com/html/download-file-1138.html)] OR in xbins
---Note#1---
You will need mIrc (or a different IRC program) and FlashFXP (or a different FTP program) to get in Xbins, click here (http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xbins.php) to find out how.
---NOTE#2---
Before you do any of this, be sure you have exactly and know exactly everything you are supposed to have/do. I am not to hold responsible if you mess something up.
---NOTE#3---
You can also use a P2P program to get the stuff from XBINS like Edonkey or Shareaza. (sorry, no links for those, illegal)
------Softmodding The Xbox------
1.- First step is to get UXE, it's in Xbins (NOTE#1 AT TOP). Exact ftp folder location is
/XBOX/CONSOLE BASED APPLICATIONS/exploits/_Packages/UXE/uxe-complete-v0.2.2.rar
2.- Extract the uxe-complete-v0.2.2.rar you download and there should be folders with names like
"uxe-c-replace" or "place-on-e". Now, if you are using a Retail HD (hard drive that comes
with Xbox) then go into the support files folder and run 71-fonts-install.bat and
nkpatcher-06-install.bat. If you have a bigger hard drive (30gb and up) then run the other 2
.bats.
3.- Download xboxhdm 1.9. Extract the files and open it.
4.- Then open the linux folder inside. There should be a C and E folder. Delete everything
out of it [there shouldn't be anything in them].
5.- Then copy all of the files inside of "uxe-replace-c" to the C folder in "xboxhdm\linux".
6.- Then copy all of the "place-in-e" files to the E folder in "xboxhdm\linux".
---NOTE--- (If you have a different dashboard that you want to startup other than EVOX (which is what's included in UXE) than put the other dashboard's files inside E\ROOT (you will need to make the ROOT folder). There should be a default.xbe in the ROOT folder.)
7.- Then go back to xboxhdm folder and run win-iso.bat [or make-win-iso.bat].
8.- Now the Installer is ready.
9.- Download Alcohol 120
10.- Install it and run it and click Burn Disc Image
11.- Select the linux.iso file in the xboxhdm folder.
12.- After burn is complete turn your computer off [keep the linux disc you just burned in
disc drive].
13.- Now unplug the IDE cable from all of your hard drives.
14.- Open Xbox, Tutorial here (http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/crack_open_that_xbox.htm).
15.- Unscrew hard drive from case inside.
16.- Loosen IDE cable from xbox hd.
17.- Turn on and make sure it boots up.
18.- If so, then wait 1 min after done booting.
19.- Now turn you computer on and when it searches for drives click Pause Break. [Next to
Scroll Lock]. It should pause the search.
20.- Now unplug your Xbox hd REALLY quick and plug the PC IDE Master cable in and click
enter.
21.- That should of continued the search.
22.- If it takes a while for the PC to detect the xbox hd then it didn't work so keep
repeating [trust me, just keep trying].
23.- If it says IDE Hard Disk then you got it.
24.- Now your computer can't boot from xbox hard drive so it will try your cd/dvd drive.
25.- [If you kept your disc in] It should have a menu with Options 1-4. Choose 1
26.- Now when it's done loading type "xboxhdm" and press enter.
27.- It should come up with a new message. Type "yes".
28.- Now another menu should come up. Type 1 and press enter.
29.- It should ask if you want to format the xbox partitions. Type "yes".
30.- If it asks to format F: drive ype "yes".
31.- Now it should ask you if you want to continue copying files from C:. Type "yes".
32.- Next it should ask if you want to continue copying files from E:. Type "yes".
33.- It should soon come up and say "All Done!". Wait 5 seconds and turn PC and Xbox off.
34.- Hook your xbox IDE cable back to your Xbox and turn it on. You now have a modded Xbox with Evox 3935 OR whatever dashboard you decided to install.
------END------
------How to FTP to XBOX below.------
35.- Now, if you are running Windows XX (I don't think it matters what version), open My Network Places.
36.- Right Click and click Add New Network Place.
36.- When it asks, don't choose the MSN network, choose your own. (Don't know exactly what it says, I'm running Windows Vista now, sorry)
37.- In the box, type in this (fill in the spots nessacery, dont include "s) "ftp://xboxusername:xboxpassword@xboxipaddress" and the network name to whatever you want.
38.- Now, open Network Connections.
39.- Right Click on the LAN Connection that the xbox is hooked up to and click Properties.
40.- Click on Internet Protocol and Click Properties.
41.- Whatever your xbox ip address is, is what your PC's IP address should be EXCEPT the last number. You can change that to whatever you want BUT whatever you change it to, you should put as your xbox's default gateway. DONT FORGET THAT.
42.- Fill in your PC IP address in space provided and click on dns textbox and it should automatically come up. LEAVE DEFAULT GATEWAY ALONE! Click ok.
43.- Now, if you did EVERYTHING right, than you should be able to open My Network Places and just open up the connection you made and your xbox ftp connection should come up!
------END------
---NOTE#4---
If having xbox connected cancels internet connection on other network connector, than change xbox and pc ip address'. EX. if xbox ip = 192.168.0.1 and pc ip = 192.168.0.2 than change them to xbox = 192.168.1.1 px = 192.168.1.2. DONT change the first 2 numbers though.

will softmodding allow you to play backups of xbox games?
^ Yes, it will. It will allow you to do (almost) all of the things you can do with a chipped xbox.

I would also like to add this is a great tutorial, though I feel some of the info could be updated for the few remaining noobs out there. Thanks for taking the time to write it.

I would like to contribute to this thread, because it helped me a lot when I modded my xbox last weekend.
For anyone new to xbox modding, let me share my findings and experiences with you. I have tried to build up each of the facts in logical order, which may allow you to skip anything you already know ;-)
1. You want to mod your xbox.
Why? -> Because it allows you to run backups and homebrew.
2. You don't need to install a modchip to mod your xbox (this is called softmodding).
Why? -> An xbox is built up like a PC, which means it has a harddisk where you can run applications from. Your MS dashboard (the app that allows you to change settings like date etc. that appears when there is no disk in the drive) is such an app. The mod consists of replacing this dashboard with another one that uses an exploit to run any app from this, including backups. A standard xbox harddisk has two partitions, with drive letters C and E, like a regular PC (D is the DVD-ROM).
3. You don't need to flash your xbox BIOS to run backups.
Why? -> While flashing your BIOS can give you some advantages (i.e. bypass security checks more easily), the replacement dashboard is enough to run backups or homebrew. It can even be harmful if you want to use xbox Live, because MS will ban you.
4. To replace the MS dashboard, you need to connect your xbox harddisk to a PC IDE controller.
Why? -> The only other way in is through the DVD player. You can't boot an app from CD or DVD to write to the harddisk, because an unmodded xbox will only run software signed by MS. The only alternative to this is using an xbox with modchip.
5. The harddisk needs to be disconnected while the xbox is running (this is called hotswapping), and reconnected to the PC.
Why? -> The harddisk is an xbox looks like an ordinary IDE harddisk, but it has a special protection: it needs to be unlocked, which can only be done through a special key in the xbox EEPROM, this key is unique for each and every xbox. When xbox needs to access the harddisk, it unlocks it briefly. It is the "art of hotswapping" to find the right moment to disconnect the harddisk in unlocked state and immediately connect it to the PC's IDE controller. There are many tutorials and strategies to do this, Google for it. The harddisk will return to locked state automatically after a while, and on each startup. In locked state, the harddisk cannot be accessed.
6. Once connected to the PC, you need to boot from a Linux CD-ROM to access the harddisk.
Why? -> The xbox uses a special file system. At this moment, the only reliable tools to access the xbox's file system or lock/unlock a harddisk are running under Linux only. Your CD needs to contain your preferred replacement dashboard and exploit (see UXE story in tutorial).
7. You can replace the xbox harddisk with any *lockable* IDE harddisk of 8GB or more.
Why? -> With a replacement dash, you can backup games to harddisk. The default xbox harddisk is very small, so the bigger, the better. The only requirement is that it needs to be "lockable", because a softmodded xbox will not use a harddisk that is not locked. Any additional space can be partitioned as new drives (F, G).
8. You cannot lock a harddisk for an unmodded xbox.
Why? -> To lock or unlock a harddisk, there are tools available on the same Linux CD. These tools need an image of the xbox's EEPROM to lock the harddisk. As explained under 5, a harddisk needs to be "married" to the xbox using this code. This means that you first have to mod your xbox to obtain its EEPROM image before you can prepare a new harddisk.
9. Once softmodded, you won't need to hotswap anymore.
Why? -> A replacement dash usually contains an FTP server, which allows you to access the xbox harddisk remotely accross a LAN. For replacement harddisks, you never need to hotswap anyway because they don't have the "autolock" protection of xbox harddisks.

i have a question
doing the hotswap method vs. old game exploit method and using the uxe does it put the new dash on c:\ or on e:\
i modded my xbox the game way 18 months ago
i have the unleash, xbmc, avalaunch, evox, and on my e:\ and of course the ms dash on c:\ drive
i want to telnet to make a trainer but there is no way to do unless the telnet could be set to goto the shadow c:\ instead of the real c:\
to get the xbmc as your dash just ftp it on to your xbox under apps.
use file explorer on the xbox goto E:\dash on one side of the screen the other goto e:\apps now make a new folder under e:\apps old dash
in the newly created folder copy you dash file here now delete the old dash files and copy the contents of the xbmc folder to dash but dont put the xbmc folder under e:\dash
it should just contain the files that where in the xbmc folder
now reboot
xbmc will be your new dash
to use your ald dash just goto programs in xbmc and select your old dash
when you quit using the old dash or reboot you will still be using xbmc as the dash:D
i change mine from time to time

This is a great tute, straight forward.. but there are a couple of things i'm not sure about.
if i use a new hard disk over 30gb, do i need to lock it first? if so, how do i do that?
how do i save game saves that is already in the retail hard disk?

To save your saved games you will need to FTP your UDATA, and TDATA folders to your computer.
Auto installers have the capibility to Lock/Unlock hard drives. Yes it will have to be locked for the Soft mod to work. research "Hot swap" tutorials. to replace the drive.

I have an xbox with a broken DVD drive (error 11 flashing red and green)
if I do this mod is there any chance it could work evox from hdd without the need for a new dvd rom?(probily not as im assuming its a bios error so it still would not boot?)
its not chipped hacked or anything just a totally untouched xbox

I just tryed to soft mod and Something went wrong I get the error 21.Anyone know how to fix?
nukleuzdj
02-14-2007, 02:44 AM
So I jumped right in and did this mod, which worked perfectly, even with a broken DVD rom.
Using an old PC cd writer as slave to trick the xbox into booting, (no more error 11)
and now its got a 20 gig laptop HDD (biggest spare I had lying around)
booting and running perfectly
also just changed the dash over to XBMC
So a pretty much written off xbox is now working great again (well with no DVD rom anyway)
Thanks to op and others in this thread

You must change your comp settings to boot from the DVD/CD Rom Drive, not your HD, which will in turn free up your IDE cable that you need to hotswap with.

Aguide for the game save exploit can be found here (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=175558).
Or you could try a SATA to IDE converter (http://shopping.kelkoo.co.uk/ctl/do/search?siteSearchQuery=sata+to+ide+adapter).

Hey,
Well, I finally got an XBOX after reading this thread earlier in the week, I had no problems getting the softmod onto the original HDD that came with the XBOX, and then I also was able to setup a seagate 80gb to boot with softmod with some help from the forums at afterdawn, but I ran into problems when trying to set XBMC as my default dashboard.
I read the wiki at xbmc.com and followed there instructions but I ended up just deleting the original MS dash somehow. Can someone just walk me through it set by step? I've followed all the instructions in the first post to a tee!
Cheers,

You mean you can do without a modchip? I hear there are stack/buffer overflow on Xbox and PS2 (Like HENC (http://bestwikiever.wikidot.com/HENx) for PSP), is this true?
h@Ck3R
10-28-2007, 05:44 PM
yeah you can do this without a modchip, that's why its called SOFTmodding, meening no hardware mod needed :). the stack.buffer problem your talking about, i hvae no idea, i dont have any problems with my xbox at all. idk wut you meen.

So you basically hook up the Xbox hard drive to computer and since PC is an open system you can install Linux to Xbox?
Does this void warranty? I use a Laptop and my desktop is only P3 (and I have two Pentium MMX, will that be enough, uness there is a USB2IDE and I can boot the disk made from linux.iso in a VM..
i dont have an xobx but if it can be softmodded then I might get one.
I know PSP can be softmodded. Thats why I love PSP, I am lucky that I the tech guy at school used flash carts so I got a super card for NDS shortly after!
And I am getting USB Extreme by COD (its hard as I am under 18 and dont have a credit card!):

Have you ever used Linux? no, I have I know what I doing. Linux can burn ISO too:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
When I said you cant use Windows I mean to apply the hacks not burn the disk.
h@Ck3R
10-29-2007, 07:07 PM
apply wut hacks? dude wtf r u talking about. this tutorial is for WINDOWS. I have no idea if winrar or winzip even work on linux. linux has nothing to do with this fuckin tutorial AT ALL. i know because i wrote it. idk y u keep bringing up linux because this tutorial has nothing to do with linux so u r breaking forum rules for being off topic. Linux is an open source Operating System, someone used this to create a BOOTUP DISC (NOT OPERATING SYSTEM) to hack the xbox harddrive (Format, copy files). ALL THINGS WERE DONE ON WINDOWS. most if not all the programs i posted are for WINDOWS. so if u have questions about linux, post it somewhere else because this has nothing to do with linux.

You are obviously a Linuix n00b, Linux can burn ISO and extract files, I never said that this was for linux. Maybe some files are EXE, Linux can run some EXE, it probably can be done by an other method, you are going on...

We'll have to agree to disagree.
I dunno how this started, but I was just saying how Linux is used in the process when you boot the cd made from linux.iso.
You can Linux can burn ISO and Unrar, it can. I dunno about anything else, if all you need to do is unrar and burn ISO then it can be done, if it looks more complicated than that.

ok heres another question for you. how do i softmod the xbox when i dont have a PC that has IDE hard drives??
however i do have this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002
could i somehow use that? my motherboard doesnt have a IDE attachment, but i have 2 IDE drives that i use as an external HDD at the moment.

it MIGHT work, just when you hotswap it (switch the hard drives) hook the xbox hard drive to the usb thing. idk if the xboxhdm will see that hard drive but then again idk if the computer reads the hard drives as SATA. reply back and tell us if it works :):)

Yeah my computer is a laptop and my desktop Pentium III will probably hang for any new hard drive (Unless partitioned funny and it has a thing in the MBR).
Maybe a VM [b]might[/url] work, you could just boot the ISO (http://bestwikiever.wikidot.com/ISO) w/o burning and ur lucky the VM software will hook up to the USB2IDE and it will be just like booting off a CD and having the harddrive hooked up!
h@Ck3R
12-19-2007, 09:18 PM
yeah he's right BUTT its not safe to be hooking up ide cables to hard drives while your computer is running. I broke my old 40gb hard drive doing this procedure before :p I think it was probably because of the power cord but its still not 100% safe.

i can't even start it after transferring the msdash files via ftp and executing the xbe over xbmc's filemanager...it always says error 21

is there any possibility to get the original dash back? i already tried several bootdiscs like Slayers 2.6 but nothing helped me out...The reason your not able to load the ms dash is because your ms fonts are hacked so that you can stall the security & re-allocate the memory and then run unsigned code, the first thing the ms dash loads is the hacked fonts and bam error 21.
By using nkpatcher you can can get around it. It's a little tricky but once you've got it worked out you won't end up with a locked out xbox if you screw C: drive over by updating or even deleting (yes I've had ppl delete the xbox C: drive via ftp)..
I use nkpatcher and boot a shadow drive as C: (my real C: is mounted as Q:), this way I can still load ms dash from within the shadow C: drive.
I've actually updated my ms dashboard while running from the shadow C: drive and it works fine. I do an IGR (In Game Reset) and I'm back to my hacked dash.

So, this is my first attempt at modding an XBOX, I followed the tutorial but now I get the service required, error 21, screen when trying to boot up.
I tried to go back into to xboxhdm and run through the steps again but when I type the xboxhd command it says "shotdown connect a drive and reboot" when i try the xbrowser command it finds the harddrive but then syas "no xbox-partition table found on /dev/hda"
Any suggestions?

Sorry to ask a noob question but.....
I just followed this tutorial and successfully modded my sons xbox. I can ftp it and it boots just fine. :)
I know you can do MANY things with this soft mod but I am at a loss on where to start. I would like to find out how to place his games on his HD and play backup Cd's. Is there a tutorial on how to use the functions of evox? I have searched and read many things and some mention hacked bios and mod-chips. His xbox doesn't have a mod-chip and the bios reads as "unknown"
any help is very much appreciated.
Thanks

ok first off, dont use evox, evox sucks. when i made this tutorial i hadnt used any other dashboard. use xbmc. you can make it look like an xbox 360 too and it has all the original xbox features plus a whole bunch of others. i think u can find it in xbins. also, to play backup dvds (most xbox games wont fit on a cd, cd is 700mb, dvd is 4.7gb) just burn the xboxgame.iso to a disc (with nero click burn iso file (or disc image) to dvd. you dont have to worry about the bios and there is no need for a modchip. to put games on a harddrive, get the xbox dvd image (xboxgame.iso) and use qwix to extract it and put the contents on the xbox in E:\ROOT\Games\XboxGameName\. then just go to games on the dashboard and it should be there. with a factory xbox hard drive it can only fit about 2 games on it, but it depends on the size of the games. you can buy a bigger hard drive, but i have no experience with that but i know its 100% possible.
(TO saltine356)
the cd u used to format the xbox hard drive must not have worked. try again, redo the tutorial

i have softmodded loads of my friends xboxes. I use ndures savegame then ftp xbmc to them , i try to avoid opening them as i dont have a desktop.
i got one yesterday from oxfam, but when i turn it on, it boots fine, etc, i have updated the dash to 5960, and copied the save game over for splinter cell (i always use it) and try to load the exploit as usual - it comes up with an error 21 and the light at the front flashed green and red.
when i turn off the xbox, it turns itself back on and ejects the tray - whats that about?
i thought the eject and power button had come loose so i opened her up only to find out that i cannot access the board behind the buttons - i gave her a clean and closed her back up - same problem.
how do i solve this - is the error linked to the buttons malfunctioning?

Thanks much h@Ck3r, I appreciate you taking the time to explain.
Been really busy so it took awhile to get back to this. Is it easy to replace the dashboard with xbmc? I already loaded evox.
Also should I install the XBMC_SVN or the slim? I am guessing SVN is newer the the slim.

03-23-2008, 02:54 PM
download 2.0.0 FAT and download the latest svn and just copy the svn over to the same folder as FAT and overwrite all files and just copy all tthe files in XBMC to E:\ROOT\. i would delete everything in root first

i finally got un banned
got my file, built my cd
didnt back up my drive
soft modded but got error 21 when i rebooted xbox
so i tried again but chose option 5
5) Wipe current fatx partition table
tried again, got error 21
so i read the tut in the xboxhdm folder
it said:
WARNING! Dont choose option 5) if you unlocked your xbox drive by hotswapping.
After the fatx partition table is wiped using this option the machine is
rebooted to continue rebuilding the drive. Upon reboot the drive will relock
(if it was just hotswapped), and since at this point the drive is empty and
will not work in the xbox you cannot hotswap again. Having the hdd key or
eeprom you are safe.
like i said, i didnt back up, i dont have my hdd key or eeprom.
am i screwed or can i fix this?

Hi!
I need some help... I followed the guide but it didn't work all way through...
I burned down the ISO file, did the hot swap ( and my BIOS found the hard drive) , booted up the CD, typed in 1 and pressed enter. After that the screen got completely black and the computer get hanged.
I waited a few minutes but nothing happened.
And now, when I try to boot up the Xbox I get error code 9. I've changed IDE cable, try master/slave and so on but nothing works... Is my Xbox dead or can I do anything about it?

ur xbox is fine. as long as u didnt click anything that had to do with the eeprom ur fine. id suggest using a different brand of blank cds/dvds and reburning the disc. idk y so many people are getting errors in the boot up disc, i had no problems so it must be the cd/dvd or the burn was unsuccesfull. u MIGHTve did the iso wrong. did u put the files where they should be and ran that win-iso.bat? if so the only thing i think it could be is the cd/dvd. UNLESS it is hanging at the linux part where it says all the drives and shows a whole bunch of small text , that just means u need to hotswap again. idk y ur gettin error code 9 if the disc didnt even work. get back with me and tell me what happens after u use another disc.

Thank you for the answer!
I have tried two discs now and none of them worked. And I followed the guide very carefully.
The thing is there is no text at all... evereything seems to be fine, as I sad the BIOS find the harddrive, the CD booting up and then I choose option 1, them I'm stuck! Know error msg or anything and I cant turn Num lock on/off.
If the Cd didnt work, shouldnt the xbox boot up as usual? Because I cant get rid of the error code 9...
Tomorrow I will go and buy thing for a EEPROM reader and hopefully that will work! But I hope you guys have an idea or even better, a solution! :D
Thanks for the time!
