View Full Version : In the future will there be a HDD for the Wii?

Hey guys I am about to order a Wiikey, but I was just wondering about a few other things. I have looked at all the other Wii (mod) alternatives and the Wiikey seems like the best choice. I was wondering though if you all think there will be a chip sometime soon where you can plug in a usb HDD and play Wii games from it. (almost what was done with the origional Xbox) Do you all think that this will even come in the near future or should I just buy the Wiikey now? Is it even possible? Please respond and thank you.

Please be serious. I'm asking for your opinion because I don't keep up with the Wii scene so I don't know what is possible or if it can ever be possible because of the way the Wii is configured.

No one has any idea, and thats as serious an answer you will get.

Some Wii dev/debug kits have a HD built in and run the games that way, but no way will you ever get your hands on that piece of kit.

Its impossible to know if something like that will ever happen but if it does and it requires a new mod chip to do it then you can just take your old modchip out and put the new one in

It may get realized when someday a bios replacement modchip comes out. That way it could be possible to use the USB ports to attach an external HDD.
So basicly yes, it could be possible, but noone can say if it will ever will happen.

Thank you all for your posts. You have helped me alot. I've decided to just get the Wiikey now and, like one of you have just posted, I can always take out the chip and replace it with the new one. Once again thanks a lot.

If the WiiXT is legit, then there is probobly gonna be a way to make it so you can run pretty much anything from homebrew off a flash drive to a backups off a HDD.

The problem is that, while I trully hope the WiiXT is for real, most people including my self( atleast partialy) think this is BS.

If you don't know what WiiXT is go here.

Also, in theory the HomeBrew for Wii is the only way I can think of getting HDD to load games for Wii. My idea (while I still don't know how) is to do some sort of mem overflow while in GC mode to somehow acsess the Wii Mode. From there we could probobly run unsigned code, and use the Wii hardware as well. Its just a theory. But now that I have my mod workig I'm going to try some things in GC mode.

Oh thanks for that information too. From what I can tell most tell people, including you, are saying that it probably isn't true. Thanks for that though, because it helps to see that I made the right choice with the Wiikey.

I'm going to say no.

First off there is no spot for it in the wii.

Second Nintendo doesn't seem to care too much about online play, which would be where a hard drive comes from.

Third if there is a hack to use an external hard drive you will face bottleknecking speed wise.

Now if we were talking a SD hack....that might be something different.

sd hack?...maybe....

sd hack interfacing with larger flash devices? dunno..

but, with USB being a very standard format, and is very well known - usb external storage devices are very very possible.

hell, even the slim ps2 has usb hdd loaders. it's definately doable. it's just a matter of dev kits, time, and investment. problem is, something to that level would take a lot of time and effort and money to make, but it would probally endup "pirated" or freeware. so it's not really worth most people's time to produce such a product....at least with the ps2 usb hdd loader disc, it was pressed...so at least they had a product to sell.

time will tell though. wii mods are still in their infancy. my worry though, is with chips like wiikey...removing the quick solder methods for most will be an issue (lifting tracks/points trying to remove the pcb).....

There was a device by crazynation (iirc) for the NGC that interfaced via the DVD connector but used a HDD, maybe someone with alot of time on their hands will envtually design a similar device.
Really though, Wii homebrew would be a far 'easier' route.
