View Full Version : Urgent Help: Getting a WiiFREE MC, have a few questions!
Ok guys I am getting the WiiFREE ModChip for $6 off their site and I ONLY interested in playing my Wii backups.
So my question is:
Do I have to do all this programming junk for it, or do I just need to install it?
Is it really worth the price? $6 for a WiiFree buy $40 for a Wiikey? Whats the main difference?
Thanks for your help ASAP if possible :)

you donīt have to program anything.
only when you order from euroasia you ust tell then wich version you want to have.
why the price.
WiiKey want to make money on their chip.
And Wii key is a free.
so it dont cost euroasia anything to make it maybe lower then 1$.
thats why the price is that low.
and yes if you loking on their site wiinewz so it should work with Wiibackups
most with own region.
What do you recommend then commercial or open source?
I just want to play Wii backed up games, so if a new upgrade comes out I would have to rip open my wii and use the PIC stuff to upgrade or will theyre be like a DVD to do it..

I believe you can upgrade your wiifree via dvd. If all you want to do is play wii backup from the same region as your console then wiifree should be just fine. So far the only wii backup game I've had problem with is Rapala Tournament. I have to reset with the game in the drive for it to be recognized. Then it plays just fine. However wiikey reads it upon inserting the disk. Wiifree will actually play my Dragons Lair 3d gamecube backup although the sound is messed up because it has streaming audio. But Wiikey give disk error when starting the game.
So for me they are at the same level. The one who wins as the best between Wiifree and WiiKey in my book is the one that comes out with the gamecube streaming audio fix first.
PS. And I don't care who already has the audio fix so please spare the flames.
oK so are there any OFFICAL updates for WiiFree?

The WiiFree is actually the modchip with the most updates. At the moment it has all features all other commercial modchips have except:
- no GameCube regionfree support yet
- no GameCube multi-disc games support yet
- no streaming audiofix yet
- not updateable via DVD
You see that most missing features are GameCube releated. The chip itself works very good, and Iīm sure that future releases will add those features.
The latest version is 2.34a and according to the first user comments itīs running pretty good and fast.
I think you won't get a better modchip for that money at the moment.

No the wiifree can't be updated via DVD.
The version I use now is 2.29 and works very well. 2.32 is what they say is the latest stable release but I haven't tried it since I don't need to.
The thing is, it works well now but I *may* have to update it if Nintendo ever decides to change something via update.
I suggest you solder a 8 point IC socket (just buy one at radio shack) to the wii and plug the wiifree chip into it. Also have that socket on the outside of the wii (grill on the bottom works nicely for this). That way, if you need to update it you just unplug the chip and then plug it back in after update (via programmer) or you obtain an updated chip for $6.
If you don't want to put up with the hassle, get a wiikey.
Thats intresting, can you show me a screenshot of what one looks like, I am new to all this (wii scene) and programing.
I know more of the PS3 scene lol

Ah yes I planned to install my chip this way, so this bassicly would allow me to program my wiifree externally correct?
Also what is the point of the 2 led lights :P

if you have an Pic programmer.
donīt buy it.
buy a pic and download the WiiFree Code from WiiNewz.com
and program it by your self.
WiiFree comes out almost every day with an update.
No Modship is realeseing updates that often.
I think WiFree is one of the best modship.
because it is updated the hole time.
What would be a cheap and good pic programmer I can get from eBay?

search for a JDM serial programmer, theres a guy in HK sells then for about $15 or so, i have one and it works fine.
ok looking from the wiifree external thing, and monkeys installing wiifree guide, I am assuming the external chip is in a SOCKET where you can pull out and place on the PIC PROGRAMMER?
On the tut it shows you solder down the external box down that way so just wondering how you would program the chip.
