Homebrew DVD Player software released for Wii - Wii Media Player DVD MFE

Team Symbiote have released a DVD Player for the Wii, now all those Wii modders can jump for joy. It seems as if a lot of hackers were at work on the project and it is a total software solution to get DVDs playing on the Wii. In order to get it working, you have to Burn the application with Clone CD, then boot it in a modded Wii with a homebrew program YAOSM 1.8, when the menu pops up you simply hit Z to unmount, change the disc to a DVD movie and then hit START to play - DVD movies finally playable on the Wii!

Controls in Movie:

L, Left, and Down = Rewind
R, Right, and Up = Fast Forward
Start, and A = Pause/Play
B = Stop
X = Subtitles On/Off
Y, Left Thumbstick, and Right Thumbstick = Nothing
Z = Unmount

Because then they have to pay for the CSS licensing fee which is a percentage of the total cost of the unit. The wii would have been about $25 more if it included dvd playback. This is why the original xbox had the dongle, it was cheaper for MS and for us to buy the kit than have the playback enabled by default. The original xbox would have been $350 with the remote if it had dvd playback but since it was optional it was only another $30. The wii is 100% capable of playing a dvd movie, all you need is a dvd drive and something cabale of processing software. It was always about the licensing fee.

THEY DID. This is a Gamecube program. The reason the homebrew didn't previously exist is because Nintendo DID make a Gamecube that can play DVDs. They also promised a Wii that can play DVDs this year. This is the proper way to do it in an age when a DVD player costs $11 and most people buying one do not want to pay extra for redundant functionality.

Great! But some admin on a website has said that running this dvd player software causes damage to the laser.. I call this bogus..

***IMPORTANT***

The use of DVD PLAYER Software for GC MODE can cause harm to your laser in the long run. Apparently the wii lens isn't made for continuous loading, and using that app (on DVD5 or DVD9) will; cause the lens to deteriorate quickly over time.

Also, save the "homebrew enabled" Wii box for an actual news story that involves REAL Wii homebrew, not GC homebrew.

Sounds a lot easier to just use a DVD Player.

-PlayStation 3 60GB, PSN Nickname: Teikiatsu16
-PSP Fat 3.80 M33
-XBox 360 Premium
-Nintendo Wii

hmmm, won't work for me!

burnt as dvd - disc is recognized as gc game.
starts okay - up to menu
pressed z to unmount
eject the disc with the wii media player dvd
insert a dvd video (original)
pressed start - disc is spinning... but nothing happens - won't start the video dvd

my config - OpenWii with atmega8

well considering it plays most file formats either from optical disc, files on the HD, across a network wired or wireless or from a usb memory device and it is 6 years old running a 733 chip with only 64mb mem plus play games, emulators etc........

I'd say it is still holding its own considering you can pick one up for about £25 / $50, softmod it, tsop or fit an actual mod if you prefer
